George Green Stillwell was born on February 5, 1842, in Morristown, New Jersey, the son of Ann Leake and Nicholas Stillwell. After the death of his mother, his father remarried Margaret Crane. He had three brothers and 11 sisters. His half sister Mary Stillwell was the first wife of Thomas Alva Edison.
He married Elizabeth Catherine "Katie" Van Cleve on September 2, 1869, in Newark, New Jersey. They had nine children in 21 years. His occupation was that of a sawyer.
