Melvin D. Bacon, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, May 2, 2003, at the Missouri Veterans Home.

He was born Nov. 18, 1919, at Cape Girardeau, son of Robert Troy and Ann Geldmacher Bacon. He and Marie Helen Telle were married Nov. 18, 1945 at Cape Girardeau. She died June 28, 1997.

He worked as an engineer, retiring from the Southeast Missouri State University power plant after 33 years.

A survivor of Pearl Harbor, he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korena War. His combat duty earned him 22 medals and nine battle stars.

He was a volunteer at the Missouri Veterans Home and at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was a graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, the Trinity Lutheran Men's Club for over 50 years, VFW Post 3838 and American Legion Post 63.

Survivors include a son David D. Bacon of Cape Girardeau; a daughter Martha L. Dickinson of Hartville, MO., and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Douglas Breite officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites by the VFW, American Legion and the Missouri Honor Team.
