Jane Ellison, third child of Matthew and Jane (Wilson) Ellison, was born at Bashaw Hall, Yorkshire, England, 27 Feb 1823. Among her girlhood memories was attending the Coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837, which she described to her children and grandchildren. Her girlhood was spent in the vicinity of Bashaw Hall, Waddington, and Clitheroe.

Jane married Thomas Coats, 15 Feb 1842. One year later they departed Liverpool, England, on the ship Yorkshire bound for America. On 28 Mar 1843, she gave birth to her firstborn child,
1. Alice Yorkshire Coats in honor of the ship she was born on. Other children:
2. Susanna B Coats, 29 Mar 1846;
3. David Henry Coats, 7 Jun 1848; &
4. Mary J. Coats, b. 4 Jun 1850. Last 3 born in New Buffalo, Michigan.

--Mary J. Coats died August 2, 1851, and is buried at New Buffalo. Thomas Coats died April 20, 1851, the day on which he had planned to go back to Illinois and take up land there.

Jane was married again on May 16, 1855, to James Isham, a native of New York State, who was born July 26, 1810. Two more children were born by this union:
5. James Matthew Isham, b. 10 Jun 1857, New Buffalo, and
6. Ellen Isham, b. 19 Jul 1859, New Buffalo. Ellen Isham died 10 Oct 1859 and is buried at New Buffalo.

James Isham died 12 Nov 1870. Jane survived until 20 May 1904, when she died in LaPorte County, Indiana, at the home of her son. Both are buried with their children at New Buffalo, Michigan.
