At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company E, Fifth Kentucky Infantry, and was transferred to the Ninth Kentucky Mounted Infantry in which he was a 1st Lieutanant, he resigned and later joined the 23rd Battalion Tennessee Infantry. (Newman's Battalion.)and served as Sergent until the close of the war.
