Marine Sgt Morgan was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361 (HMH-361), the "Flying Tigers" of Marine Aircraft Group 16, Combined Task Force 58, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, California. His CH-53E Super Stallion Helicopter, loaded with Marines and cargo during a re-supply mission, went down when an engine failed and it fell hard onto a snowy mountain plateau. Dwight graduated from Willits High School in Mendocino County in California. He enlisted in the Marines immediately after graduation and planned to be a "lifer" in the Corps. He met his wife, Teresa, in the 11th grade and she liked him immediately because he wasn't like the other 18 year old goof offs. "They didn't really care much about anything, and he would, he cared." Dwight was already determined to join the Marines, so she agreed to be a Marine Corps wife. They married after high school graduation in June and he set off for boot camp one Sunday after church.

NOTE: The WB network television show "7th Heaven" featured the family and friends of Dwight. The show's "Ruthie" character is shown corresponding by e-mail with Morgan before his death. The episode, called "The Known Soldier," includes a scene of a memorial service dedicated to Morgan with his family and some Marines in attendance.
