Howard R. Avery, 85 years young, of Buckner, IL departed this life to be with our Lord God at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, February 10, 2013 at his home with family members present. He was born January 28, 1928 in Benton, Illinois the son of a Coal miner, Marian Francis Avery and Velda (Grant) Avery. He was raised by his father and Pearl (Braden) Avery whom he called MoM. He married Edna May (Gouge) Avery on June 26, 1953 and they enjoyed 56 years of happiness when she preceded him.
Richie, known by his family and friends was a devoted husband and loving father who provided for their six children. Richie attended West Frankfort High School. Richie served in the US Army, Company F 38th Infantry Camp Carson and received the World War II Victory Medal, discharged with honors in 1947. Richie retired from General Motors with 34 years at the St. Louis assembly plant. Richie and Edna raised their children in a Christian home in Cahokia, Ill. He served the Boy Scouts as an Assistant Scout Master and was a member of Moose Lodge 423 in Cahokia. Richie was also a member of the VFW in Orient, Ill. Richie and Edna loved family gatherings, camping trips, and sitting on the front porch together. Richie's last year was a challenge; however he always had a smile on his face for his family that visited, love in his heart, and was pain free in his last days at his home in Buckner. Richie loved to watch the birds out of his picture window and enjoyed playing with his companion Rascal the rascally cat.
Richie is survived by six children: Jimmy Dean Avery and wife Darlene of Buckner, IL, Larry Gene Avery and family of Buckner, IL, Rita Avery McKinney and husband Gary of Wright City, MO, Stella Grace Head and husband Charles of Texas City, TX, Bobbie Sue Avery-Rigual and family of Buckner, Il., Debra Joy Avery and family of O'Fallon, MO; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren; brother: James Harold Avery and two sisters: Patsy Akins and Minnie Wyatt.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents; three sisters: Imogene Reed, Joyce Pasquino, and Leona Lovan, eight brothers; Marion JR. Avery, Roy Avery, Jackie Avery, Charles Avery, Donald Avery, Troy Burges, Bobby Burges, James Holland, many other relatives and close friends, each and everyone sadly missed often and thought of by him.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 11:00a.m. in the Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort, IL with James C. Broshears officiating. Visitation will be from 9-11a.m. at the funeral home followed by the services. Interment will be at Denning Cemetery in The Township of Denning (Orient), IL. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Southern Illinois. This would be Richie's wish. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
