James Madison Cain, son of John and Nancy Kincaid Cain, was raised with his siblings forming a family of 13 children. They were not poor living on a farm in Claiborne Co, TN. James was young when the Civil War came thru the Tazewell area. Sometime after 1860, his parents moved the family to Campbell Co, TN, Well Spring area. At this time, James was a teenager and attending school. Most boys his age would not be attending school but working in the fields. After getting his education, James continued to live with his parents, helping them with the farming. James Cain married Florence 'Tishia' Dossett, Sept 16, 1886. He was abt 30 years of age when they married. This is kind of old to be getting married for the first time. Most men were married by the time they were in their early 20s. After his wife's death, his 3 little boys needed to be looked after while he made a living. Most men, after losing a wife, and having young children, will marry again soon after. It is common for them to marry a sister of the decease wife. James does not do this. He must have been heart broken over her death. His sister, Susan Cain, moved in with them, to help take care of the boys. James Cain worked over the years as a Farmer, and a Day Laborer. They lived in a house that James was buying. His sons attended school while also helping on the farm. Sometime before 1910, James Cain sold the house in Campbell County and moved the family to Knox Co, TN. He rented a farm, that he and his sons farmed on. They seem to do well with the farming. James's sister, Susan Cain Dossett, married T. H. Dossett but he died soon after they married so she came back to help with the household. By 1920, James moved in with his son, Edward and his family. All are living on a farm that Edward is buying, and is located on Kingston Pike, in Knox County. His father farmed on the farm, with another hired farm laborer. James M. Cain lived a long and productive life, dying at age 73.
