Hong Ballenger was a victim of the sniper killing spree led by John Allen Muhammad & John Lee Malvo, also known as the “Beltway Killers”. Mrs. Ballenger, 45, a beauty supplies store manager, was murdered as she left work and got into her car. The motive for her killing was robbery. In order to get a conviction of first degree murder in the case of Dean Harold Meyers of Manassas, Virginia, prosecutors needed to prove Muhammad guilty of multiple killings. In testimony introduced during this trial, 2 eyewitnesses placed Malvo at the scene of Mrs. Ballenger’s murder. Authorities in Baton Rouge positively identified a bullet recovered from the murder scene as matching a bullet fired from the .223-calibur Bushmaster owned by Muhammad. Mrs. Ballenger was a wife and the mother of 3 sons.
