Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a Captain and Commissary of Subsistance, US Volunteers on March 24, 1862. In this capacity he instituted the first bread ovens in the field in the Union Army, a practice that became widespread as a method of feeding Union troops. He was brevetted Major, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 "for meritorious services in his department during the war". He was honorably mustered out on December 13, 1865.
