He moved to Cookeville in 1873, he was the 1st druggist to do buisiness in Cookeville (1874-1878), began his practice of medicine in 1878, and continued to get his medical education for many more years.
In 1875 he married Lillie Dale Crutcher (1857-1927) daughter of Joe Crutcher and Mary Jane McKinney.
J. B. S. Martin and L. D. Crutcher had 11 children: H. G., Jesse C, Dr. Claude P., Mary W., Samuel E., Nettie V., Fannie Lou, Christine Sunshine, Daisy Dale, Henry C., and John Crutcher Martin.
