Jim Champion funeral held Sunday
James Rye Champion, 54, of Grayling, formerly of Cass City, died suddenly last Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Grayling.
He was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Cass City, the son of Andrew and Gladys (Rye) Champion.
He married Lulubelle Heron April 5, 1946, in Cass City. On May 20, 1975, Champion married Mrs. Renate Generous in Spartanburg, S.C. They moved to Grayling in 1976 from Cass City.
He was the third generation of his family to operate the outdoor advertising business started by his grandfather in 1902. He sold the business before moving to Grayling, where he owned a bar.
Champion was a member of the National Rifle Association Grayling Sportsmen's Club and served in the US. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Renate; one son, James Champion of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Nathanial (Rebecca Ann) Bishop of Clearwater, Fla., and Lisa Champion of Orlando, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Suzanne Generous of Grayling; one step-sister, Mrs. Maitland (Aileen) Peterson of Essexville, and two grandchildren.
The deceased was taken from Little's Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m. Sunday to the First Presbyterian church of Cass City, to lie in state until the 2:30 funeral service. Rev. Harry Capps officiated.
Burial was in Elkland cemetery, Cass City.
