At the tender age of 15 Roy took his first job as a delivery boy for the George E. Roberts Grocery Store in East Chattanooga where he made his delivery's in a horse drawn wagon. Eventually he worked up to clerk and assistant postmaster where he was affectionately known as "Mr. Roy" to the local folks. He continued in the grocery business for the next 51 years retiring in 1941. In 1897 he married Miss Francis 'Fannie' Murrey. They celebrated their Golden wedding Anniversary in 1947.
