Thomas Gaston Wood was born in 1843 in Walton County, Georgia to Thomas And Emily Wood. Thomas was a Baptist minister who died in 1852. Emily died in 1858 leaving Thomas and his three brothers as orphans. When war came Thomas enlisted in Company H “Walton Infantry” of the 11th Georgia Volunteers in Atlanta, Georgia on July 3rd, 1861. He would serve as a drummer for his company. When the 11th Georgia was sent north to the defenses around Richmond, Virginia later that July he accompanied his regiment. The regiment came close, but missed the First Battle of Manassas due to insufficient rail support. The regiment remained camped in Virginia as the winter of 1861 to 1862 passed by. On December 13th, 1861 Thomas died of pneumonia. It is likely that he caught it from exposure to the cold. He is buried in Section A, Row C, Grave 37 in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond. In this image he appears to be quite small and very young. If I could have guessed I would’ve said he was younger than seventeen or eighteen. His exact date of birth is unknown so we are unsure of his exact age at the time of his death. He wears a frock coat with dark trim along with a kepi. His kepi appears to have “TGW” scratched in it so that he might not lose it.
