Second Lieutenant Rickel served with the 34th Bomb Group, 4th Bomb Squadron at Blythe Army Airfield, California.

He was one of four airmen who perished when B-17F Flying Fortress #42-3126 crash landed twenty miles southeast of the airfield, on the Arizona side of the Colorado River, and the aircraft was destroyed by fire on the ground.
