He was killed in an accidental explosion of ordnance -- he was helping dispose of 107mm Russian-made rockets when they exploded. He enlisted in the military at age 19, joining the Colorado Army National Guard where he specialized in communications and foreign languages. Among his military awards and decorations were the Purple Heart; Bronze Star Medal; and Legion of Merit.
Commingled remains of the soldiers killed in the explosion were interred in a single joint grave in Section 60 Site 7757 at Arlington National Cemetery.
