He was also a composer, and in 1936 he wrote a musical score for Orson Welles, and later works by William Saroyan, Tennessee Williams and others. He was married to Jane Bowles, a novelist and playwright who died in 1973. Among his other works are "Let It Come Down," "The Spider's House" and "Without Stopping: An Autobiography." He was cremated and his ashes were buried near the graves of his parents and grandparents on November 1, 2000.
