Shirley Mae Johnson, age 85, of Gardar, ND, most recently of Grand Forks, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Woodside Village, Valley 4000, Grand Forks, ND.
Shirley Mae Cox was born on November 27, 1927, in Bottineau ND, the daughter of the late Joseph and Laura (Melhaus) Cox. She graduated from Mountain High School. On June 22, 1957 she married J. Oliver Johnson in Mountain ND. They lived and farmed in Gardar, Pembina County, ND. She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Gardar. She worked as a cook for many years, including at the Crystal School and Borg Memorial Home; she enjoyed her family and china painting. She created many lovely pieces.
She is survived by her husband, Oliver, daughter Sharon (Randy) Hodge of Killarney MB, son Wayne (Connie) of Park River ND, son Jay (Cindy) of North Barrington IL, daughter Jill (Terry) Ginder of Drayton ND and son Jerry (Barb) of Huntington Woods MI. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; siblings: Paul Cox, Benny Cox and Donny Cox. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Avis, Dee-Dee, Grace Ellen, Hazel, Esther, Fern and Edith, and brothers Darrell, Joseph, Howard, Mytron and Dean and Thurman Parrill.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at the Valley 4000 Chapel. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at the Gardar Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Valley 4000, Grand Forks or Gardar Cemetery.
