He attended the University of North Carolina, studied painting at the University of Mexico, and ultimately graduated from Yale University in 1943. While serving as Vice Consul to Seville and Barcelona, Spain he studied bullfighting with some of the top matadors of the time including the great Juan Belmonte. He published his first novel, "The Innocent Villa", in 1948 while working for Sinclair Lewis.

In 1953 he open El Matador nightclub in San Francisco and ran it for 10 years. In 1973 Barnaby started Santa Barbara Writers Conference which he directed until 2004.

As an artist he favored portraiture. Two of his portraits, one of Truman Capote and another of James A. Michener hang in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Conrad was 90 years old when he passed away from congestive heart failure.
