Obituary for Martha Doris Blessing Barber
Mrs. Martha Doris Blessing Barber passed away May 29, 2016, at her home in Bluffton, South Carolina, at the age of 100.
A resident of Mansfield for 85 years, Doris graduated Mansfield High School, in 1932, at the age of 16, attended Texas A&M Junior College at Arlington, and began her career in education. Four years later, she married 'the boy next door', Ben Barber, in 1936. She began teaching in a one room school house in Gerty, Texas in the 1940's until it was absorbed by the Mansfield Independent School District. From there, she taught second and third graders for a few years in Mansfield. She returned to teaching fifth grade in 1955, and at the same time, finished her own education at TWC in Forth Worth, graduating in 1960.She continued to teach fifth grade for 20 years, retiring in the mid 1970's from Mansfield ISD.
Mrs. Barber is survived by one daughter, 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Everyone who met her always commented on what a sweet personality she had and how she maintained a great sense of humor.
