Ruth was the oldest child of Georg Holmbach and his wife Cecelia Jersin. Georg emigrated from Copenhagen, Denmark where he was a native, and Cecelia from Norway. Their two other children were Arne and Dagmar.

Sadly their mother Cecelia died after a botched abortion. Georg then quickly remarried a Mary Olsen, also a native of Denmark. They had two children Cecelia and George. Again tragedy struck when Georg died of typhoid fever while Mary was pregnant with George.

Ruth went to live with Uncle John Jersin in Chicago. Arne went to live with another uncle Jersin in North Dakota. Dagmar went to live with Aunt Elsie Jersin also in North Dakota.

Georg, Cecelia, Mary, and George Jr were buried in various cemeteries in Chicago where Georg was employed as an engineer in a musical instrument factory.

After her husband's death Mary ran a grocery store and deli in Chicago. She never remarried.
