Civil War Union Army Officer. A native and citizen soldier from Mercer, Maine, he served as Colonel and commander of the 21th Maine Volunteer Infantry. This regiment was organized as a result of the Aug. 4, 1862 call for 300,000 militia for nine months duration of service. Assigned to the Department of the Gulf, he and the regiment engaged the Confederates at Port Hudson and celebrated the subsequent defeat and surrender of it. Honorably mustered out of service on August 25, 1863 with the rank of Colonel, he rejoined the Union cause December 3, 1863 by enlisting and accepting a Captain’s commission in Maine’s 2nd Cavalry. He was mustered out honorably on December 12, 1865 at Barrancas, Florida.
