A.L. Kilgo, who founded the Sand Island hardware store of the same name, died Nov. 19, 2000 in Honolulu. He was 90. Kilgo was born in Cullman, Ala., and owned a business by age 20. He joined R.W. Woolworth Co. to open the chain’s first bakery and was soon asked to place bakeries in Woolworth stores throughout the Midwest. Kilgo came to Hawai‘i during the early days of World War II and became known for his ability to acquire hard-to-find surplus goods for the Navy’s civilian employees at Pearl Harbor. In 1946 he opened his store in a cubicle on Sand Island Access Road. When the surplus items became scarce in the 1970s, Kilgo focused on hardware items, and Kilgo’s became one of the state’s largest suppliers of building, marine and industrial supplies. His store also expanded from a Quonset hut to its current complex, covering 7 acres. In 1991 Kilgo was honored by the Retail Merchants of Hawai‘i as retailer of the year. A year later he stepped down as the company’s president and chief executive officer and assumed an advisory role as chairman emeritus. Kilgo is survived by his wife, Trini, and sisters Christine Mickle and Ida Pauline Brown. Funeral services have been held. Donations can be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1310 Punahou St., Honolulu, HI 96826. (Source: Honolulu Star-Bulletin)
