Willie "Joe" Banes was born on August 23, 1935 in Jefferson County, AL and he entered Heaven's Gates at 4:42 a.m. on February 20, 2013.
He was a minister of the gospel in the Church of God for 37 years, serving as pastor in Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, and West Virginia. He was an ordained Bishop in the state of Alabama at the time of his passing. His faith in God was unwavering, and the only love that came close to measuring up to it was his love for his wife, Evelyn Yvonne Banes. Married on June 15, 1954, their marriage and relationship was what many would consider to be a "fairy tale". He leaves her behind with the promise that he is saving a place for her in glory.
He is survived by three children, Ersie Keith Banes, Cynthia Lynn Sink, and Angela Marie Pate, grandchildren, Joseph Ryan Banes and his wife Ashton, Jordan Ryan Banes, and Jadon Ryan Pate, and one great-granddaughter, Katelyn Starr Banes. He was a self-taught musician, teaching himself to play the piano so that the churches he pastored would always have at least one musician. He passed his musical talents and love of music on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.
He was a strong man, a fearless, bold, and passionate presenter of the gospel, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, honest and hard-working. He loved the outdoors, from mowing the grass, to planting flowers and maintaining a vegetable garden, he truly embraced God's creation and took as much from it as he could.
His wife Evelyn remained by his side at both Marshall Medical Center South and Gadsden Riverview Regional throughout his final days. He and Evelyn were visited by and cared for by numerous friends and family members. The Banes family would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those for their prayers and support during this trying time.
Brother Morrell Upchurch, Ryan Bristoe and Ryan Banes conduct the Funeral Service on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 11:00am in The Chapel of Snead Funeral Home.
