He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 25, 1947, the son of the late John A. and Helen (Mihalovic) Cohan.
He was of the Protestant faith.
John was a veteran, serving in the Navy.
Prior to his retirement, John worked for many years at Spaulding Bakeries and General Foam in the Valmont Industrial Park, and then later in the custodial department at the former Bishop Hafey High School.
He was a member of the Hazleton Owls Club and the Jeddo Stars.
He was an avid walker at the Laurel Mall, sometimes going twice a day. He also loved fishing and was a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his wife, the former Jayne Ann Wagner, in 2002; and a grandson, Colby R. Fellin, on May 1.
Surviving are his children, Jodi L. Cohan, Hazleton; Kim Zimmerman Fellin, Hazleton; Seth Gwaltney, Florida; and Jon P. Cohan, Florida; eight grandchildren, Jared Stock, Megan Fellin-Judd, Rachel Fellin, Angel Cohan, Tabitha Tucci, Amber Cohan, Seth Gwaltney and Chelsea Gwaltney; and six great-grandchildren, Roman Judd, Anthony Tucci, Reiley Tucci, Aaliyah Tucci, Lilianna Tucci and Sadie Degenhart. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. from Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home Inc., 542 N. Wyoming St., Hazleton. The Rev. Douglas McKeeby will officiate.
Interment will follow in St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, St. Johns.
Relatives and friends may call on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
