Thomas M. Dillon, 72, former mayor and fire chief of Grand Island, died at the St. Francis hospital at 6:30 Wednesday evening. He had been suffering from ill health for the past three years and his condition had been serious during the last month. He had been removed to the hospital only a few hours before his death.

Mr. Dillon served three terms as mayor of Grand Island from 1933 to 1939. He built up a long record of service with the Grand Island fire department. Mr. Dillon joined the volunteer fire department in 1897, serving as chief for two years. He was named fire chief when the first paid department was organized, remaining in that capacity from 1909 until 1930. The former mayor and fire chief led a vigorous life until his health failed and was known as a lover of sports, particularly baseball. There were many reforms during his six years as mayor. Reorganization of the police department and the installation of two-way police radio are examples.

Mr. Dillon was born in Iroquois, Ontario, Canada, January 1, 1868, coming to Nebraska in 1888. He was a member of the English Lutheran church and a member of the Ashlar Lodge No. 33, A.F. & A.M., a Shriner and belonged to the Elks and Eagles lodges.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at the English Lutheran church at 2:30 o'clock. The Masonic lodge will officiate at the graveside rites in the Grand Island cemetery. . . Mr. Dillon is survived by five daughters, three sons, fourteen grandchildren and five step-children. He was preceded in death by his first and second wives.
