Professor Emeritus of Romance Languages and head of Italian Dept. at Vanderbilt University for 37 year. Graduate of Howard College (now Samford U.) in Birmingham, Alabama. 1931 Rhode Scholar. Know in Nashville as "Dr. Philologue" on WSM Radio's "Waking Crew" for 15 years. Author of many books and translations. Spoke 10 languages fluently. National award from the government of Chili for his translation of their epic poem.
