John W. Anderson, 88, of Manistee, died peacefully Friday morning, May 20, 2016 at Vista Springs Assisted Living Center in Wyoming, Mich.

He was born Feb. 12, 1928 in Detroit, the son of the late Edward and Emma (Stewart) Anderson. He was united in marriage to Norma Lee Carty on Dec. 4, 1950. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1983. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the end of WWII. During the Korean Conflict he was recalled to duty because of his radar training, only this time serving in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Walke.

After service John returned to Manistee. His first career was salesman and later assistant manager at Montgomery Wards, until the store closed in the 1970s. He started his next career selling cars for Mowry Buick and Pontiac, and later Benchley’s, until the dealership closed due to the GM shakeup.

In the 1970s his wife Norma was on the Manistee Township Board. She suggested that he join a group of guys who were getting together to create what we now know as the Manistee Township Volunteer Fire Department, which he did and became one of the founding members. He served as Assistant Chief and then for a short time as Chief of the department. In the early 1980s he was approached to consider the role of Manistee Township Supervisor. He stepped down as Fire Chief to fill the shoes of Chuck Schoedel as Township Supervisor, upon Chuck’s passing, a position he held until stepping down about three years ago, due to health issues. Even after stepping down, he still wanted to know how he could contribute.

He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, card games, traveling to Florida and Las Vegas, square dancing, polka dancing, bowling, but more importantly, spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Manistee United Methodist Church.

John is survived by his children John Jeffrey (Cynthia) Anderson of Racine, Wis., Sue (Bill) Pachesny of Hudsonville and Becky (Jeffrey) Ullrey of Rockford, Mich.; by his grandchildren Steven John Anderson, Megan and Tyler Pachesny, and Justin and Jarrett Ullrey; and by several great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, John was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Halcomb, and by a brother Stewart Anderson.

Funeral services will be held at Manistee United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, with Rev. John Scott officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Military honors will be conveyed by the Manistee United Veteran Council Ritual Team.
