WAS WELL KNOWN PIONEER RESIDENT

Holiday festivities held at the home of Martin Kvitek at Maribel Sunday, came to a sudden and sad termination when Mathias Sladkey, one of the guests suddenly expired while seated at the table partaking of the feast which had been prepared for the occasion. Mr. Sladkey's body was immediately removed to his home.

Mr. Sladkey, who is the father of Joseph Sladkey, the well known insurance man of this city, is one of the pioneer settlers of Manitowoc County and has resided here for along term of years known and respected by his friends. Sunday, with members of his family, he accepted an invitation to attend an opening at the Kvitek place and during the afternoon enjoyed the occasion with other guests. The party had just been seated for supper when Mr. Sladkey suddenly fell from his chair and when others reached him, was found to be dead.

DROPS DEAD AT CELEBRATION.

Matt Sladky, father of Joseph Sladky of this city dropped dead Sunday night without warning of any kind. When the tragic end came Mr. Sladky, who was 70 years of age, was seated at the supper table at the Christmas dance being held at Kvitek's new hall at Cooperstown. Deceased had been in good spirits and apparently in the best of health all evening. He was a retired farmer living in the town of Cooperstown and had been a widower for several years.

The dance was a formal dedication of Mr. Kvitek's new hall and the death put an end to the big event.

Mr. Sladky was one of the early settlers in the northern part of the county having come from Bohemia in his youth and was a respected citizen.

He is survived by a large family of adult sons and daughters.

Notes From Rosecrans.
On Sunday night, Dec. 26, while at the grand opening at M. Kvitek's (Jr.) hall at Maribel, the Angel of Death appeared in the midst of a great crowd of people and called away Matthew Sladky, Sr. The cause of his death was apoplexy.

He was about 75 years of age. He danced a quadrille about an hour before midnight, and at the supper table he passed away. This was a great shock to a number of his relatives and friends who were present at the dance.

He may be classed as one of the most prosperous farmers in Manitowoc County. He took much interest in the welfare of his children, by furnishing each of his three sons with comfortable homes. He was always at every social gathering and was always welcome as he was sociable and jolly. He took much interest in political and public affairs, although he never aspired to any public office. He was a very popular man and won the esteem of all who knew him.

He is survived by three sons and three daughters. His wife preceded him in the passage to the land beyond the skies some years ago. He was a member of the C.K. of Wisconsin.

The funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 30, from St. Wencel's church, at Greenstreet, of which the deceased was always a strict member.

He is now sleeping that long, peaceful sleep, which, on earth knows no waking, and all his cares and toils are o'er. May the earth rest lightly upon his clay.
