Following information provided by Lindsay Hale:

David fought for the Union - 9th Missouri Calvary - in the Civil War and he died as a result of his service. He never recovered from the harsh conditions of his war experience. His proof of disability states it was due to "chronic diarrhea due to exposure of over duty, loss of sleep, and from drinking bad water".
