Born into a Quaker family, Silas moved to New Garden, Guildford County, North Carolina as a child where he spent his youth and married Mary Hunt in 1770. Then in 1793 they transferred to the Westfield Monthly meeting in Surry County, Virginia, then to Mt. Pleasant Monthly Meeting in Grayson County, Virginia in 1801 and eventually joining the Darby Creek (Goshen) Monthly Meeting in Champaign County, Ohio, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

Born of this union were Rachel b.1771, Levinah b.1773, William & Richard b.1777, Rebeckah b.1779, Silas b.1782, Asa b.1782, Mary b.1787, Katherine b.1789, Prudence b.1793 and Esther b. 1797.

Although burial is unknown, it was most likely the Old Friends Graveyard near the source of the north fork of Kings Creek, now known as the Friends Cemetery or Lapham-Ryan Cemetery or Old Mount Tabor Cemetery in Champaign County, Ohio.
