Sylvester died in the "Line Of Duty" in what became known as the West Loch Disaster during the war.
The West Loch disaster occurred when LST-353, which was moored along with 28 other LST's in Pearl Harbor, exploded while preparing for Operation Forager during the war. The other five LST's were LST-39, LST-43, LST-69, LST-179, and LST-480.
In total 163 men lost their lives with a further 396 wounded in this incident.
Sylvester's remains were returned to San Francisco, in October 1947, aboard the Honda Knot. Next of kin listed as Cora Brown, Ridge, St Mary's county.
Burial was somewhere in Maryland.
