Pennsylvania Governor. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar, moved to Armstrong County, Pennsylvania and was appointed the County District Attorney. He was member of the Pennsylvania Assembly, (1835 to 1841), elected to the Pennsylvania State Senate, in 1847 and served as Senate Speaker of the House in 1848. In 1848, when Governor Francis R. Shunk resigned due to illness, Johnston was elected as a Democrat the 11th Governor of Pennsylvania, serving until 1852. As Governor, he helped bring financial stability to the state and edited and printed documentation of Pennsylvania's early history in what continued as the Pennsylvania Archives. After leaving office, he became involved in iron making, salt manufacturing and oil refining. He also served as President of the Allegheny Railroad, until his death.
