Matthew (Matt) Muchowski, 78, veteran Newton tavernkeeper, died Friday
at the Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc, following a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the Leschke Funeral Home,
Manitowoc, and at 9:30 at St. Casimir Catholic Church, Newton. The Rev. L.
Lisowski will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Muchowski was born in Chicago in 1874 and shortly after his parents
moved to Manitowoc County. When a young man he was a clerk in the old
Williams House in Manitowoc, then took up farming for a time and opened
a tavern in Newton.
He was active in the tavern business for more than 40 years. He was a
member of the Eagles and the Holy Name Society of the St. Casimir
congregation.
Mr. Muchowski married Miss Mary Smazel in 1901. She died in 1921. In 1927
he married Emily Bialkowski. She survives with three sons, Leonard of
Manitowoc, Donald of Newton and Matthew Jr., in the U.S. Air Force at
Westover, Mass.; two daughters Mrs. Frank Pokorski of Newton and Mrs.
Querin Steffen of Manitowoc; three sisters, Mrs. Mathilda Engelbrecht
of Manitowoc and Mary and Rose of Newton; five grandchildren and six
great grandchildren. Two sons preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the funeral home where the rosary will be recited
at 8 p.m. Sunday.
