As a babe in arms in 1852 he crossed the Oregon Trail to the Oregon Territory and his parents finally settled on the east side of the Lewis River in Washington Territory. He was reared in Clark County receiving his education in the Public Schools. In 1886 he was elected to the post of Justice of Peace and in 1890 elected to County Clerk. He belonged to the Democratic Party and numerous other organizations. He raised cattle in Fruit Valley; his registered brand was a drawn bow and arrow about four inches long on the animals left shoulder. He was for many years an active member of the school board.
