Marine Pvt Hutchings was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Edward Brown waited three weeks to find out what happened to his son, who was listed as "whereabouts unknown" after a battle in the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah. Brown learned his son Nolen was killed, and his body was found with several other dead soldiers. He was killed by friendly fire as he was traveling with an armored vehicle unit. His unit was hit by an errant strike from an Air Force A-10 warplane providing air support. Nolen attended Crystal Lake Middle School in the mid-1990s when he lived with his dad for a year. Those who knew him say he had his share of problems, but he then moved to Boiling Springs, South Carolina to live with his mother and her husband, Larry Hutchings, who legally adopted him. He was proud to be a Marine and he cared about people; he cared about God. Nolen had done some missionary work through the youth group at his church and was an all-around good kid. Teachers at Boiling Springs High say he returned repeatedly, in uniform, to the campus to renew acquaintances and sing the praises of the Marine Corps. He seemed leaner, happier, and prouder than ever.
