U.S. Army Sgt. Casey Thomas Briggs, 23, of 10746, Spring Ridge Road, Shippensburg, died suddenly on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, in the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Bel Air, Md.

Born on Aug. 23, 1986, in Rhinebeck, N.Y., he was the son of H. Thomas Jr. and Jennifer L. Germond Briggs of Shippensburg.

Sergeant Briggs was a 2004 graduate of East Aurora High School, East Aurora, N.Y. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving on active duty from 2004 until 2008, completing basic and advanced training at Fort Knox, Ky., as an M1 Abrams Tank Crewman. After his training Sergeant Briggs served with the 1st Battalion; 34th Armored Regiment; 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan. He was a graduate of the United States Army Sniper School and the Combat Lifesaver Course before serving a one year tour in Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon leaving active duty in 2008, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve, where he served as a vehicle mechanic with Company B, 98th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, Mesa, Ariz.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Abigail E. Briggs of Shippensburg; his loving girlfriend, Megan Tiedemann of Phoenix, Ariz.; his uncle, Mark (and his wife, Julia) Germond of Stanfordville, NY,; three aunts, Trudy (and her husband, Mike) Minnick of Alfred Station, N.Y., Jamie (and her husband, Lynn) Basiliere of Chateaugay, N.Y., and Linda (and her husband, Paul) Bronson of Anaconda, Mont.; his maternal grandfather, Homer Germond of Cape Coral, Fla.; his maternal stepgrandfather, Robert Skidmore of Millbrook, N.Y.; and cousins, Jesse Germond, Meghan Minnick, Kate Minnick, Alex Minnick, Anders Ibholm, Jon Bronson and Karin Hite.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, in the Mongul United Brethren Church, 4162 Roxbury Road, Shipppensburg, with the Rev. Rocky W. Spear officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing or visitation.
