HAROLD F BRIXIUS

Harold F. Brixius, age 84, a resident of 806 S. 28th St., Manitowoc, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Aurora Medical Center in Two Rivers.

Harold was born on April 28, 1922 in Yankton, S.D. to the late George and Clara Chvala Brixius Sr.

He attended Manitowoc schools and continued his education at the Manitowoc Technical Institute, where he received the structural welders qualification through the Wisconsin Industrial Commission granted at Marquette University, Milwaukee.

On Aug. 14, 1943, Harold married Eunice M. Sobieski at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manitowoc. Eunice preceded him in death on July 7, 1988.

In September 1943, Harold enlisted at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Great Lakes, Ill. During his tour of duty during World War II, he served overseas in the Pacific Theatre. From May 4, 1943 to Feb. 10, 1945, Harold served as corpsman and second-class deep sea diver aboard the USS Pennsylvania. He received the Navy Unit Commendation for outstanding duty during this time. In December 1945, he was honorably discharged with the rank of second-class ship fitter. For his efforts, he also received the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Philippine Defense/Liberation/Independence Ribbon, and the Philippine/Republic of Korea/Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation. From 1940 to 1946, except during his service involvement, he was employed with Manitowoc Shipbuilding.

In February 1946 until the present time, Harold founded and operated Brixius Manufacturing Inc., formerly known as Manitowoc Designers of Steel Custom Fabrication. Harold was a current member of St. Francis of Assisi, and formerly St. Paul's Catholic Church; past president and member since 1940 of the Izaak Walton League, where he also served two years on the board of directors; life member since 1943 of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 659; life member since 1962 of the Manitowoc Elk's Lodge 687, where he held the lodge office of Tiler for 39 years and was named Elk of the year in 1992 for his community involvement and 10 year involvement with the Drug Awareness Committee; member of the Manitowoc Noon Optimist Club since 1960, where he served as chairman for the next 15 years for the Optimist State High School Power Lifting Program; a T.P.A. member since 1959; past member of the Eagles Club 706 which he joined in 1972; served with the Manitowoc Safety Traffic and Parking Commission since 1990; and was also active with the Boy Scout Troop 8, where he had served as chairman in 1950. Harold was appointed by the Bishop of the Green Bay Diocese to be the chairman for the building project for Roncalli High School here in Manitowoc.

Survivors include four sons: John (Michelle) Brixius, Dan (Joy) Brixius, Michael Brixius, and Tom (Peggy) Brixius, all of Manitowoc; three daughters: Janet (Don) Vogel, Green Bay; Jean (David) Zich, Arizona; and Diane (Gale) Mittnacht, Manitowoc; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law: Evelyn (Florian) Jankowski; also many other relatives and friends surviving.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Eunice; three sisters: Josephine Powalisz, Dorothy and Kathryn Brixius; a brother: George Brixius Jr.; a son-in-law: Charles Weiss; and two brothers-in-law: Francis Powalisz and Chester Sobieski.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Sunday, July 23, 2006, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. A prayer service will be led by Deacon Paul Kieffer at 7:30 p.m., and will be concluded with a cinematic video tribute. The visitation will continue on Monday, July 24, 2006, at St. Francis of Assisi-Marshall Site, from 10 a.m. until the start of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. The Rev. Thomas Wojciechowski, O.F.M., will officiate with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum. Military rites will be accorded by the VFW Post 659. The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 628 N. Water St., Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
