Wife of British Prime Minister Lord James Callaghan (1912-2005). Lady Callaghan was born into a middle class English family on July 28, 1915 in Maidstone. Her father was a successful businessman, superintendent of the Baptist Sunday School and a deacon of Maidstone Baptist Church. School was not for Audrey, she was a born Homemaker. She met her future husband at a Tennis Club when she was 16 years old. James then a trade union official, was established as the assistant secretary of the Inland Revenue Staff Federation. they married on Audrey's 13rd birthday in 1938. The couple had three Children, Margaret, Michael, and Julia. Lady Callaghan devoted her life to bringing up her children during the time that her husband was away serving in the Royal Navy from 1939 to 1945. She became an active member and eventually chairman of her constituency Labour Party and local Fabian Society. She went on to become an alderman of the Greater London Council from 1964 to 1970. James Callaghan became prime minister in 1976 after the resignation of Harold Wilson. He would remain for three years. He left the position in 1979 after Labour suffered a landslide defeat at the hands of Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives. Lady Callaghan continued her work right up to the last years of her life. Lady Callaghan died at a Sussex Rest Home with her Family by her side, she wa 89 years old. Lord Callaghan joined his wife eleven days later.
