Mrs. Evelyn Purcell, musician, volunteer
A memorial service for Mrs. Evelyn Pollard Purcell of Union City, a church musician who received a governor's award for volunteer work will be at 1 p.m. today at Christian City Convalescent Center chapel after burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.
Mrs. Purcell, 73, died of cancer Wednesday at Southwest Christian Hospice.
She received an award from the governor's office in 1984 for volunteering 4,733 hours at Christian City Convalescent Center, where she organized and directed a rhythm band that performed around metro Atlanta.
She was a former choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Albany, Ga.
Evelyn Pollard was born June 24, 1918, in Buchanan. {Born to Luther P. Moore and Glennie Mae McBrayer Moore Pollard. Step-father Roy Glenn Pollard FAG# 74917307. Death information states Luther as father. She chose to be buried as Pollard, so I will not change to Moore.}
She was president of Stone Point colony Condominium Association.
Surviving are two sons by a previous marriage, Scott A. Overby of Union City and Stevan R. Overby of Rincon, Puerto Rico; two daughters, Michalyn M. Palmer of Redlands, Calif., and Robin M. Overby of Winter Park, Fla.; a sister, Doris Galloway of Newnan; and nine grandchildren.
