IN HONOR OF THOSE WHOM HAVE GONE BEFORE US BY KEEPING THEIR MEMORIES ALIVE WITH FIND A GRAVE
Jarratt was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1925 to John and Lillian Brunson. His brother Kenneth, died in early childhood and his sister Barbara Ann recently passed away. His favorite cousin, Pat Noel, was his constant companion during his childhood and they remained close until his passing. Raised in the South, he attended Clemson College and the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). He proudly served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was later recalled during the Korean War into the Air Force. After graduating from the University of Mississippi and obtaining his Master's Degree from the University of Chicago, Jarratt embarked on his career as an educator.
He moved to Pasadena in 1954 from Racine, Wisconsin and began a long and celebrated career with the Pasadena Unified School District. He worked as a teacher at Don Benito for ten years and then as a school administrator at many different elementary schools including; Willard, Hale, McKinley, Arroyo Seco, Roosevelt, Linda Vista and concluded with Jefferson Elementary School where he was principal for twenty years. Among his many accomplishments while at Jefferson are the Bi-lingual and Movement Education programs, plus Jefferson became a California Distinguished School.
Jarratt was not finished with education even after retirement, as he worked for fifteen years with student teachers and interns at Pacific Oaks College and Cal State University (Dominguez Hills).
Never idle, Jarratt was interested in so many things. A life-long stamp collector, he also collected coins, loved gardening, raising dogs, travel with his beloved wife Jane, and, of course, reading. He studied old automobiles and knew much about aviation. He believed that it was important to give back to your community and was involved in many civic organizations where his love of education and reading was reflected. As a founder of The Pasadena Educational Foundation in the 1970's, his original goal was to raise $10,000 to provide resources for Pasadena's School district. Today PEF raises millions each year for PUSD programs and teachers. An avid reader, Jarratt was president and very active in the Pasadena Area RIF (Reading is Fundamental), which provides books to second grade students. He was also led The Friends of the Pasadena Library. These all reflected his motto that reading and education were the keys to success.
He also served on the City of Pasadena Recreation & Parks Commission and Foundation as well as on the Education Committee of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.
Jarratt was also past president of the California Retired Teachers Assoc., Association of Professional School Administrators (APSA) and Pasadena Association of Retired School Administrators, jobs he loved, as they kept him in contact with those who were so important to him and to education.
A dog lover throughout these years, Jarratt and his wife Jane raised Old English Sheepdogs and, more recently, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. He was past president of The Kennel Club of Pasadena and, until his passing, was their delegate to AKC. His Cavaliers, Ulla and Sally have brought him hours of enjoyment and comfort. He also led the Golden State Old English Sheepdog Club and was involved with the OES of So. California, the Toy Dog Club of So. California, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of So. California.
Travel and family were such important aspects of Jarratt's life. Beginning with travels to Brazil and Africa when he was in the military to the twenty-six cruises and travel to all fifty states with Jane, Jarratt was always planning his next trip. Having just returned from a cruise to Hawaii before falling ill, Jarratt had plans for a cruise to Honduras and the Mediterranean. His family, friends and associates will never forget this amazing man who inspired so many to learn, to read, to travel, and to tell a good joke. He will be in our hearts forever.
