CHEATWOOD, Alfred William Sr., 85, of Salem went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 8, 1996 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Elliston, Montgomery County, Va. Mr. Cheatwood was a well-known athlete in his youth and played professional baseball for many teams in the Southeastern U.S. and in the North also. He performed as a vocalist of Christian music in church and on local radio stations. He was self-employed later in life and founded several companies. He worked in Africa, Iceland, Greenland, and the Orient on U.S. Government Installations and helped train the residents in those localities in the skills he had mastered. Mr. Cheatwood was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Inez Cheatwood, of Elliston; his sister, Virgie C. Wells, of Ironto; grandchildren, Terry Lee Cheatwood and Alfred Conner Cheatwood. He was also preceded by a great-granddaughter, Marcia Dawn Cheatwood. Mr. Cheatwood is survived by two sons, Alfred W. Cheatwood, Jr. and Wayne D. Cheatwood and wife, Doris; one daughter, Jewell C. Bryant; seven grandchildren, Lt. Michael A. Cheatwood, of Virginia Beach, Julia C. Block, of Norfolk, Benjamin Cheatwood, of Roanoke, Steven Cheatwood, of Roanoke, Capt. Mark Cheatwood, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Debbie Bryant, of Charlotte, N.C., and Randy Bryant, Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Herschal Cheatwood, of Alexandria, Va.; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday July 11, 1996 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Thomas C. Clay of Richfield Retirement Communities officiating. Interment will be immediately following in Elliston in Montgomery County, Va. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday July 10, 1996 at Oakey's North Chapel.
