Edmund C. Burdick, loving husband, father and grandfather
BLACK CREEK -- Edmund C. Burdick, of 6698 Crabb Hollow Road, passed away Saturday (March 2, 2013) in the Olean General Hospital following an illness.
Ed was born Dec. 27, 1927, in the home of his grandparents, Clara and Edward Bartlett, in Weston's Mills and was a son of Charles Raymond and Blanche Dewey Burdick. On March 20, 1948, he married his wife of almost 65 years, Shirley A. Hill, who survives.
Ed attended a two-room school in Weston's Mills and then the Olean schools and was a 1945 graduate of Olean High School. He also attended General Motors Institute in Michigan in 1945.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 at Fort Belvoir. After his service to his country he worked a paper route in Weston's Mills. Ed worked for Vincent Wilday Buick a couple of different times as well as Line Materials, then McGraw Edison from 1952 to 1971. In 1972, he and his wife bought Burdick Trailer Sales in Weston's Mills, which they ran until 1988 when they sold it to Gary Rinehart and Buzz Wenke. Ed then sold cars for Meyer Barnard Chevy and he went to work at West State Hardware.
He was elected town supervisor for the town of New Hudson in 1982 until 1991 and then he was elected as Allegany County legislator for District II in 1992 until 2006, representing Cuba, New Hudson, Clarksville, Friendship, Amity and Ward.
Ed was a 60-plus-year member of the Portville Lodge 579 beginning in 1952 where he was a past master for two years; Coudersport Consistory; District Deputy Grandmaster; a life member of the Weston's Mills Fire Department from 1946 to 1970; was a delegate in the Allegany County Legislature for 12 years; and a legislator delegate for NYS DEC Fish and Game Association for 12 years.
Surviving Ed, besides his wife are one son; Ricky Lee (Pam) Burdick of Black Creek; two daughters, Sandra (David) Greenslade of Avon Park, Fla., and Valerie (Gary) Rinehart of Eldred, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Andria (Chip) McHargue, Adam (Marci) Greenslade, Kenneth (Kary) Rinehart, Melissa (Bill) Clayson, Angela Burdick, Daniel Johnston, Michael Elliott and Jacque Elliott; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arline (Richard) Collins of Hamburg and Janice (Max) Hurlburt of Hinsdale; one brother, Keith (Bonnie) Burdick of New Port Richey, Fla., and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Fehr, also of New Port Richey; many nieces and nephews.
Ed was predeceased by a sister, Betty Lou Fehr.
Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery.
