"Max G. Hemmis, 84, formerly of Millcreek, passed away Friday at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home. Born in Morrisdale, Pa. November 2, 1920, he was the son of the late John J. and Agnes Yingling Hemmis. He served in the Army during WWII, and earned the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star. He had worked at G.E. before the war, the Atlantic Richfield Co. for 22 years, and ten years with the Pa. Liquor Control Board as a clerk, retiring in 1983. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, having several citations for record fish, and enjoyed furniture refinishing, ceramics and bingo. He was on the residents council at the Soldiers and Sailors Home. He was preceded in death by a brother, Sgt. Norman K. Hemmis who was killed in action during WWII, and a sister, Rhoda Seargent. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, three sons, a daughter, three brothers, two sisters, ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Private interment at St. Gregory Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Soldiers and Sailors Home or the Shriner's Hospital for Children."
