Confederate Soldier. Enlisted as a Private, 7 July 1863 in 2nd (Duke's) Kentucky Cavalry Regiment. Served under John Hunt Morgan and was on Morgan's raid into Ohio. Captured with Morgan's troops at Salineville, Ohio, 26 July 1863. Assigned to prison at Camp Douglas Illinois near Chicago and was held there until 24 Feb 1865 when he was released.
OBITUARY:
Columbia Statesman, Boone County Missouri, 14 March 1879, "DIED: COWHERD -- In Boone County, March 8, 1879, after a short illness of pneumonia, Mr. J.C. Cowherd, aged about 35 years. Deceased was married on the 18th of December last to Miss Venice, daughter of Mr. W.F. Hall of this county and is thus early made a widow."
