GERTRUDE E. HEINZ

Gertrude E. Heinz, age 88, formerly of 1515 N. 23rd St., Manitowoc, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center.

Gertrude was born March 13, 1921, in the town of Newton, daughter of the late Erwin and Clara (Jaeger) Zastrow. She married Alfred Henry Heinz on Feb. 18, 1941, at First German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death Feb. 5, 2007. Gertrude worked as a homemaker for Manitowoc County Social Services for 13 years. She was a member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, past member of the ladies aid, Homemakers Club and member of 20 Gardeners. Gertrude enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting and spending time at their cottage at Sugar Creek.

Mom loved to garden and in years past you would have seen her at the county historical site working the gardens or at home digging in the dirt around the yard. She also did genealogy research for more than 10 years and if you saw a woman taking pictures of tombstones that was mom. We remember the times we would come home and mom was sitting on the couch praying for her children or the times she would be arranging flowers or wreaths and you could hear her humming or singing a song. She loved to play canasta and you had better be quick and sharp to beat her at the game. We will miss her but she now is healed in body, mind and spirit and in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

(Survivors omitted for privacy.)

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred; two sisters: Berniece Lade, Edith Peters; one grandchild: Becky Boldt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3209 Meadow Lane, Manitowoc. The Rev. Robert Kujawski and Rev. Stephen Melso will officiate with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum, 1500 Wisconsin 310, Manitowoc.

Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home, 818 State St., Manitowoc, and again on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.

Gertrude's family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center for the kind and compassionate care given to Gertrude for the past 7 ½ years.
