Former Hastings resident, Bobbie Prostok, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013 at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, KS, surrounded by her loving family. Bobbie was born to Edwin and Florence Lehmann on February 5, 1928 in Chicago, IL.
Bobbie attended primary school in Atlantic, Iowa before moving to Hastings where her parents took over ownership of Philipp's Smart Shop from her grandfather. Bobbie grew up in ladies ready to wear and worked with her parents learning the art of buying, merchandising and management. This was her passion.
Bobbie met Max Prostok on a blind date and they married three months later. Max joined the family business and they worked together for 40 years. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Together, they loved travel and spending time with their family. Bobbie staged fashion shows and especially enjoyed the annual Y teen style show. She mentored many young girls on hygiene, self-esteem and the art of dressing. She was highly regarded for her sense of style, her beauty and her ability to relate to young women. Her loyal customers were her cherished friends.
Bobbie was a woman ahead of her time. She was not only a working mother, but a community leader. She was a member of the Hastings (NE.) Chamber of Commerce and served as the first female president. Bobbie was also an active member of Eastern Star, Altrusa, YWCA, ORT, and held many leadership positions.
In 1981, Nebraska Governor, Charles Thone, appointed her to serve as the first female Nebraska Highway Commissioner. She enjoyed this position, the many people she met and represented throughout the state. In 1983 Bobbie and Max retired from Philipps and moved to Delray Beach, Fl where they enjoyed golf, sunshine, shopping and an active social life. They moved to Overland Park, Ks December 2007 to be with family.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her loving husband Max in 2008.
Bobbie is survived by: children, Beth & Jeff Dorfman of Leawood, KS., Judi and Jim Gessford of Lincoln, NE. and Jeff and Cynthia Prostok of Ft Worth, TX.; Grandchildren, Peter and Amy Shapiro, Ben and Erin Nathan, Ben and Colene Gessford, Mitchell and Nikki Perry, Alec, Payton and Philipp Prostok and 7 great grandchildren.
Burial was in The Mt. Sinai Cemetery, Hastings, NE.
