Capt. R. W. Orrell Dies
Mathews - Retired Navy Captain Robert Whaley Orrell, 82, died Saturday in Walter Reed Memorial Hospital, Gloucester, after a long illness.
Well known here for his humanitarian activities, he was instrumental in formation of the Matthews Volunteer Rescue Squad.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, he was a graduate of the University of Michigan.
A resident of Mathews County for 40 years, he made his home at Clearwater on the North River and was well known throughout the area as a yachtsman and pilot.
He was a member of Ware Episcopal Church, Gloucester; American Legion Post 83, Matthews; the Navy League of the United States, and the Sons of the American Revolution, Yorktown.
A Ham radio operator, he was also a member of the Old Timers Radio Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Anne Mullen Orrell of Cardinal.
A private burial at 2 p.m. Monday aboard his yacht Kim will be conducted by the Rev. Michael H. Murray, rector of Ware Episcopal Church.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Mr. Murray and the Rev. Samuel Sayre at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Ware church.
The family suggest expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Animal Care Society, Matthews.
