Professor Marion Clyde Wier, A.B. (St. John's College); A.M. (University of Chicago) Latin and Greek; Ph.D. (University of Michigan).

"Marion Clyde Wier (St. John's '92, Ph.D. Michigan '18), Instructor in [Rhetoric] 1910-11 and Assistant Professor in [Rhetoric] 1921, was regarded as one of the most successful teachers of creative writing the University of Michigan has ever had, and he is still mentioned by his colleagues and former students for his erudition and for his enthusiasm for poetry."

Professor of Rhetoric, University of Michigan; Professor of English and Rhetoric at Brown University.

Professor Wier was also at one time (1923-1924) on the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Music, where he taught violoncello.

His many publications include:

"The Prometheus Vinctus ...," 1916 [a translation].

"The Influence of Aeschylus and Euripides on the Structure and Content of Swinburne's Atalanta in Calydon and Erechtheus," 1920.

"The Agamemnon of Aeschylus Translated from the Greek Text of Sidgwick," 1920.

"The Voyage of Arion" [cantata libretto written for the composer Earl V. Moore], 1921.

"Ex Umbris," 1947.

"Canzoni D'amore: Sonnets in a New Form," 1959.

The following obituary appeared in "The Bridgeport Telegram" (Bridgeport, Conn.), Monday, June 18, 1962:

Marion C. Wier Retired Educator Dies

"Marion Clyde Wier, 90, a retired Brown University professor, formerly of 2134 North avenue, died yesterday in Golden Heights convalescent home, Fairfield.

Private services will be conducted Wednesday in the Dennis & D'Arcy funeral home, 1046 Fairfield avenue, with the Rev. Robert C. Worthey, acting vicar of St. John's Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Grove Cemetery.

Born in Arundel county Maryland, Mr. Wier had resided in the Bridgeport area for 12 years. A graduate of St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland, he had also instructed at the University of Michigan.

Surviving are a son, Gordon D. Wier, of Stamford; a sister, Mrs. Sally W. Brooks of Detroit, Michigan,; several grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews."

His parents were Joseph Nelson Wier and Sarah Parrish Wood.
