MERLE EVERETT HUTCHINS

Merle Everett Hutchins, 78, of Lakeside Boulevard in Manitowoc, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 7, at San Francisco, California.

Mr. Hutchins was born Jan. 23, 1903, at Haverhill, Mass. He received a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and a M.S. Degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as metallurgist in the research laboratory of Aluminum Company of America, New Kensington, Pennsylvania, before moving to Manitowoc, where he worked as a metallurgist for Mirro Corporation from 1934 until his retirement in 1968. Mr. Hutchins was well known in Masonic work. He was a member of Manitowoc Lodge No. 65, where he served as master of the lodge, and Manitowoc Chapter Royal Arch Masons No. 16 where he served as high priest and also as grand high priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of the State of Wisconsin. He also served as thrice illustrious master of Manitowoc Council No. 18, and eminent commander of Manitowoc Commandery No. 45 which entitled him to Honorary Degree Knights of the York Cross of Honour of which he was a member of Priory No. 16. Mr. Hutchins was also a member of the Honorary Degree of Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests and the Tripoli Shrine Temple. He is the author of "A Century of Masonry (1856-1956), The History of Manitowoc Lodge No. 65."

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Fay (née Haines or [Haynes?]) Hutchins; a daughter, Sidney Hutchins Hepler of Anchorage, Alaska; and a daughter-in-law, Sharon L. Hutchins of Flagstaff, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by a son, Emilius Hutchins.

A memorial service will be held at Masonic Temple, 810 Chicago St., Manitowoc, on Tuesday, May 19.
