William's parents were John Thorp and Virginia Wood. He married Mildred Holmes in 1875, born in November of 1862. They had all their children before the turn of the century. His sons were Archibald born in June of 1876 and William born August 1893. Their daughters were Virginia born in January of 1879, Mary born March of 1887. Then, being a lawyer, he held political office, during which Mildred was born in 1897. At some time before 1900 he owned his own home, paying a mortgage, at 106 Church Street of Rocky Mount. William and Mildred helped raise his neice, Lucy Thorp born in June of 1876. Actually he held the office of Mayor of Rocky Mount three times, which was highly unusual. He served in June of 1894 to May of 1898, then John Baker served a term. From May of 1901 to May of 1909 William was Mayor two consecutive terms, then dying three years later after leaving office.
